Jude Cooper Bauer is the son of Frederick "Rick" Bauer and Harley Cooper. He was born on-screen October 12, 2001. He has three siblings, one maternal half-sister Susan "Daisy" Lemay, one maternal half-brother Alan Cooper "Zach" Spaulding and one paternal half-sister Leah Bauer. Jude is the product of a one night stand between Rick and Harley following her split from her husband and Rick's best friend Phillip Spaulding.

During her pregnancy, Harley began working with FBI agent Augustus "Gus" Aitoro and it was he, with Rick's help, who delivered Harley's son, while Gus and Harley were accidentally locked in a jail cell together. Not long after Jude's birth, Rick and Harley became engaged so that they could be a family for Jude. The pair didn't end up getting married as they realised that they weren't in love with each other and were better off as friends. During her engagement to Rick, Harley began to have feelings for Gus.
Harley began dating Gus while Rick moved on with Melissande "Mel" Boudreau. In the summer of 2002, Rick and Mel married as Rick developed heart failure. Soon after the marriage, Rick got a heart transplant and made a full recovery. Meanwhile, Harley and Gus moved in together. Harley's ex-husband Phillip didn't think that Gus was a suitable father figure to their son Zach and took Harley to court. Phillip won custody.
In 2004, Phillip became unstable and kidnapped Zach and Jude along with his other three children Elizabeth "Lizzie" Spaulding, James Spaulding and Emma Spaulding. Phillip was later shot and presumed dead. Gus later tracked down the children and they were returned to their parents.
In 2005, Harley was falsely arrested for Phillip's murder and Harley was once again taken away from Jude. Following Harley's being exonerated, Gus and Harley finally married.
In 2007, Gus, Harley, Zach and Jude's lives were in for a lot of changes with the arrival of Harley's daughter Daisy and Daisy's father Dylan Lewis. A few months later, Gus's newly discovered son Raphael "Rafe" Rivera and Rafe's mother Natalia Rivera arrived in town. By year's end, Gus and Harley had split with Gus reuniting with Natalia.
In 2008, the new year saw Harley start dating Cyrus Foley which didn't sit well with Rick who briefly wanted to take custody of Jude from Harley. Following Harley's relationship with Cyrus breaking up, Harley left town leaving Harley's father Frank "Buzz" Cooper Sr. and brother Frank Cooper Jr. to care for Zach and Jude. Months later it was announced that Harley had moved to Greece and Zach and Jude went to live with her.
